One Redditor responded saying that these memes occasionally experience a resurgence as Todd Howard appears in the news cycle.

Todd Howard, what is up with his memes lately? from OutOfTheLoop

In another popular out of the loop post someone was wondering why people are calling Todd Howard a liar.

Why do people say Todd Howard is a liar? from OutOfTheLoop

He said that he was reading No Man’s Sky reviews online and was surprised at how many people are calling him a liar. He thought that all Bethesda and Todd Howard did was produce high-quality video games.

Redditors responded, listing out some of his famous lines and embellishments. Included among them are the following examples: that Fallout 3 would include over 200 different endings, the see that mountain you can climb it fiasco, that the popular video game Skyrim would have infinite quests, that within Skyrim towns or settlements and they could be wiped out if video game player has elected to kill everybody in the towns, and that Radiant AI was actually organic behavior and not scripted.

Video game players can be a pretty irritable lot, so it wasn’t surprising to see that this thread expanded and expanded as more people layered on complaints and criticisms, off and bickering with each other as they listed out all of their grievances against Bethesda and Todd Howard.

Another Redditor complained that beyond just general exaggerations, he’s straight-up lied, saying that inside Skyrim procedural snowfall was completely misrepresented and that you’re able to impact Town economies by doing work in them- those features several years ago we’re not present in the game. We can’t speak to whether they are now or not, but it definitely is cause for all of this furor about Todd Howard and Bethesda.

One Redditor said that it had taken him over 4 hours to download the 76 beta, and if it had actually been Skyrim that he installed on his computer, he said that he would have had a nervous breakdown.

Other people said that it’s not too bad of an accident and that if they ended up with Skyrim on the computer instead of the 76 beta they probably just end up playing Skyrim because he was such a great game.

However, another Redditor had a more technical explanation saying that these errors can occur if the downloader is misconfigured with the wrong ID or URL.

Summing Up

As always, Know Your Meme has a temperate review of the controversy. In particular, they paid some attention to his reputation over time. They say that he has received a lot of criticism and praise, emerging is one of the best-regarded game developers by IGN. They also took a look at some of the parody accounts, saying that he himself does not have any social media profiles.

They also dissect the different types of memes that have emerged from this, calling one Toddposting- “the act of trying to advertise future Bethesda games in a mockingly blunt and non-sneaky way through photoshopped images of Todd Howard, wearing various disguises”.

They also examined the Wikipedia Raid controversy– apparently, there were a lot of vandalism edits on the page causing it to get locked down for a long. Of time. Even after the lock was released though people hadn’t forgotten their rage and his page got spammed over and over again with tons of mass joke edits.

I think what we have learned from this controversy and all the memes that have emerged from it is that you don’t want to piss off video gamers. As well, there’s a significant overlap with video gamers and Reddit users so you know there’s going to be a ton of memes generated at your expense whenever you cross people in these communities.
