Todd Howard is the designer and producer behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout video game series. He’s a man gamers love to mock – memes at his expense are scattered across Reddit and Instagram. They mainly target his habit of “exaggerating” (lying) about game features in interviews, or the mid-2017 raid of his Wikipedia page. Toddposting has become super popular in the gaming community – you’ll see tons memes that mock Todd for over-promoting his newest games.
Todd And The Sweet Little Lies
The Crowbcat YouTuber compiled a fun music video compiling Todd Howard’s most infamous ‘exaggerations’:
This post will take you through some of the current Todd Howard memes circulating social media, from the trendy to the totally obscure.
The 23+ Best Todd Howard Bethesda Memes
1. Toddposting in the green text format
This post from a Reddit user is a perfect example of Toddposting. It shows Todd shrieking about his newest product, using the popular greentext story format adopted from 4Chan users.
2. The exclusive Todd skin
This image from Instagram shows Todd in a Teletubbies costume, holding a shotgun. It refers to the costume as a “Todd skin”, referencing the various skins characters can buy and wear in the Elder Scroll games.
3. Todd Howard in Click
Another Toddposting Reddit post – here’s Todd on the cover of the movie Click, shamelessly promoting his newest edition of Skyrim.
4. Todd Howard’s thin upper lip
This tweet has been circulating as a Todd Howard meme around social media, showing a closeup of Todd’s face and mocking his teeny upper lip, as well as his ability to continue re-releasing new (and maybe not so improved) editions of Skyrim.
5. Who’s laughing now, Todd?
This post from a Reddit user shows a screenshot from an actual interview with Todd Howard, but with a gun photoshopped in (referencing his insistence that there will be serious variations in the guns in the newest Skyrim). It’s a double-meme, mocking the gun thing and his over-promoting.
6. Todd as Joffrey
Enough said, right? If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you get the reference. Todd is Joffrey – narcissistic, full of lies and way too powerful.
7. Just kidding… unless?
This format has been super popular in Instagram memes lately. It’s another classic example of Toddposting – referencing how Todd unnecessarily re-releases Skyrim without many improvements.
8. Can’t be mad about the dialogue system
This Todd Howard meme from Reddit mocks Todd and the newest Skyrim – the dialogue is lousy, but that doesn’t matter because there aren’t enough NPCs (non-player characters) to talk to, right??
9. Todd as Bruce Lee
Here’s a simple image from Reddit showing Todd alongside the famous Bruce Lee quote, but changed to reflect his habit of constantly re-releasing the same game.
10. The Chad Godd Howard
“Godd Howard” is a nickname a lot of Reddit users have given Todd – basically meaning he thinks too much of himself. This meme plays off the popular “Chad” meme that originated on Reddit. Todd’s, like, such a good guy, right??
11. You can climb that mountain
When Todd was presenting the early editions of Skyrim back in 2011, he made a lot of references to being able to climb mountains in the game. Needless to say, that has become a huge meme over the years.
12. Did you know your AR-15 can be modified to play Skyrim?
Another Todd Howard meme with double meanings – Todd loves to talk about how weapons in the new Skyrim will be modified, and he loves to talk about new platforms to play Skyrim on.
13. Just one more video and I’ll go to sleep…
This meme from Reddit is just plain absurd – a Todd Howard ASMR? That has to exist somewhere on Youtube, right?
14. Refund Fallout 76
This meme circulating around Reddit and Instagram shows Todd rejecting gamers’ wishes – to refund Fallout 76, in the dialogue format of a Fallout game.
15. Well hey there, pal
Here’s a Toddposting meme from Reddit that shows Todd with a gun, greeting the casual scroller with a not-so-friendly message: pre-order the newest Fallout!
16. Todd Howard: Liar Liar
This one’s pretty easy to figure out: Todd as Jim Carrey in Liar Liar. He’s known for lying about the features of his games, and gamers on Reddit won’t let him forget it.
17. Todd being protected by the Wikipedia moderators
This meme is in a popular format, showing an older Wolf that did his best to save a cub – the cub is Todd, and the wolf is the Wikipedia monitors, who tried (and failed) to protect his page from gamer trolls.
18. Todd as Thanos
This meme from a Reddit user shows Todd as Thanos from Avengers. The infinity stones – the precious gems that give Thanos his power – are the various Skyrim editions.
19. Lie to me, Todd
The Drake format in this meme has been super popular on Instagram for the past year or so, showing two different versions of the same thing. This one is calling Todd a liar – just a more acceptable version of a liar.
20. Todd Howard or Godd Howard?
This Reddit Todd Hower meme plays off the “Godd Howard” joke, showing Todd raising one hand alongside Jesus, Buddha and Shiva in the same pose.
21. Todd’s more attracted to Fallout 76
This meme shows Todd photoshopped into the “red dress girl” meme, looking super interested in Fallout 76 when he should be focused on Starfield – at least, according to gamers on Reddit.
22. Todd as Scrooge McDuck
This image shows Todd Howard as Scrooge McDuck, skiing down a mountain of gold and cash. The meaning’s pretty clear – Todd is rolling in the money he’s made off the constant re-releases of his games.
23. Todd choosing Fallout 76 over Starfield
This meme from Reddit plays off Todd choosing to re-release Fallout instead of working on Starfield, like a lot of gamers want. It shows him in a car taking a dramatic exit toward Fallout 76, not following the main freeway toward Starfield.
There you have it – 23 of the most viral Todd Howard memes on social media. Gamers love to mock Todd, but it’s all in good fun. We can expect to see more and more of these memes circulating as his games keep evolving.
Over on Reddit, one person was confused by the proliferation of these Todd Howard memes. He says that he respects the man but is confused by them- wondering why people are so upset and angry. One Redditor responded saying that these memes occasionally experience a resurgence as Todd Howard appears in the news cycle.
At the time, he was apparently part of Bethesda which was presenting their showcase at Gamescom. Generally, this Redditor explained, people are mad because he has a tendency to oversell Bethesda’s latest projects.
In another popular out of the loop post someone was wondering why people are calling Todd Howard a liar.
He said that he was reading No Man’s Sky reviews online and was surprised at how many people are calling him a liar. He thought that all Bethesda and Todd Howard did was produce high-quality video games.
Redditors responded, listing out some of his famous lines and embellishments. Included among them are the following examples: that Fallout 3 would include over 200 different endings, the see that mountain you can climb it fiasco, that the popular video game Skyrim would have infinite quests, that within Skyrim towns or settlements and they could be wiped out if video game player has elected to kill everybody in the towns, and that Radiant AI was actually organic behavior and not scripted.
Video game players can be a pretty irritable lot, so it wasn’t surprising to see that this thread expanded and expanded as more people layered on complaints and criticisms, off and bickering with each other as they listed out all of their grievances against Bethesda and Todd Howard.
Another Redditor complained that beyond just general exaggerations, he’s straight-up lied, saying that inside Skyrim procedural snowfall was completely misrepresented and that you’re able to impact Town economies by doing work in them- those features several years ago we’re not present in the game. We can’t speak to whether they are now or not, but it definitely is cause for all of this furor about Todd Howard and Bethesda.
Todd Howard Degenerates Comment
For the people who were trying to figure out the context of this, a YouTube commenter helped explain:
“You never know when you’ll need a free hand.”
“To hold your coffee, what are you-?”
*audience laughs louder
Back At It Again
Over in the Reddit memes subreddit, someone posted it image of a social media post saying Fallout 76 bug accidentally installs Skyrim. Apparently, this meme is making fun of some of the buggy software that sometimes is produced by Todd Howard and Bethesda.
One Redditor said that it had taken him over 4 hours to download the 76 beta, and if it had actually been Skyrim that he installed on his computer, he said that he would have had a nervous breakdown.
Other people said that it’s not too bad of an accident and that if they ended up with Skyrim on the computer instead of the 76 beta they probably just end up playing Skyrim because he was such a great game.
However, another Redditor had a more technical explanation saying that these errors can occur if the downloader is misconfigured with the wrong ID or URL.
The faces of Todd Howard after E3
In this meme from the Elder Scrolls Community, it’s apparently making fun of Reddit reaction to some type of video game release after the E3 conference. One person was confused and a helpful Redittor explained that a lot of Fallout fans in 2018 were really upset because Fallout 76 is online-only wow a lot of Elder Scrolls fans at the time were really pleased because they had received an update on the Elder Scrolls VI.
As always, Know Your Meme has a temperate review of the controversy. In particular, they paid some attention to his reputation over time. They say that he has received a lot of criticism and praise, emerging is one of the best-regarded game developers by IGN. They also took a look at some of the parody accounts, saying that he himself does not have any social media profiles.
They also dissect the different types of memes that have emerged from this, calling one Toddposting- “the act of trying to advertise future Bethesda games in a mockingly blunt and non-sneaky way through photoshopped images of Todd Howard, wearing various disguises”.
They also examined the Wikipedia Raid controversy– apparently, there were a lot of vandalism edits on the page causing it to get locked down for a long. Of time. Even after the lock was released though people hadn’t forgotten their rage and his page got spammed over and over again with tons of mass joke edits.
I think what we have learned from this controversy and all the memes that have emerged from it is that you don’t want to piss off video gamers. As well, there’s a significant overlap with video gamers and Reddit users so you know there’s going to be a ton of memes generated at your expense whenever you cross people in these communities.
