If you’ve ever stumbled across the #girlswithmuscle, #musclegirls, #femalebodybuilding, #fbb hashtag, you might be an exercise addict or have some muscle fetish.

That’s between you and your faith tradition.

Kidding aside, Female bodybuilding initially grew out of the late 19th-century European vaudeville and circus strongwomen competitions, Bernarr Macfadden’s turn of the century women’s physique competitions, and the bodybuilding of Abbye “Pudgy” Stockton, but also as an offshoot men’s bodybuilding.

What Is #girlswithmuscle?

Basically, #girlswithmusicle showcases women who lift.

According to GirlsWithMuscle.com’s About page, the concept represents the “hard work of female athletes, fitness models, and bodybuilders.”

Scrolling through this hashtag on Instagram, you’ll see a ton of jacked women powerlifting, bench-pressing, and squatting.

We’ve assembled some of the best Instagram images of #girlswithmuscle.

The emrickettz Instagrammer posted a more modest photo as she prepares to chow down on some pasta after 6 PM:

But you can definitely see that she’s a committed bodybuilder by her work in the squat rack:

German Brawn

The princesa_ferrea Instagram account is apparently a German bodybuilder’s. She posted some really brawny pictures of herself in a gold bikini:

There’s also a good YouTube video showcasing Anny P.:

Tank Pose

The fatgurlliz Instagrammer posted an arresting photo of her posing, back to the camera, in front of a tank. You can see that on her singlet she’s advertising her Instagram handle- a clever way to drive traffic to her page.

She writes “It can take some women a long [ass] time to realize that it’s ok to be a chingona. Know this, I walk in my own world happily and confidently. Shout out to all the baddies out there that have embodied the chingona within them.”

Sauna Strong

The ms.angelstarr_ifbbpro_ Instagrammer posted from inside what looks like a wood-paneled sauna, wearing a red and white bikini, saying “#waybackwednesday to about June or July of last year in the beginning of my contest prep. I believe I was about 165 lb here, and of course, posing in the sauna as per usual 😉 #quadqueen #bodypositive #muscleissexy #saunatime #frontdoublebicep #prep #fitnessmotivation #bikiniseason #femalebodybuilder”:

If you click through to her Instagram profile, she markets herself as an International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness professional and includes a PayPal link, where you can presumably pay her for coaching consultations.

The amandinha1 account (Amanda Machado) has some great muscle-building content, including her striking a pose in front of a white brick wall.

She’s got really jacked forearms, including a “Discipline” tattoo on her left one. Apparently, at the time of this writing, besides being an “IFBB PRO”, she’s a restaurant manager.

She’s Brazilian, apparently, and you can see some more images of her serving customers and discussing white truffles below:

Back in the gym, you can see from the picture and her commentary on how hard she works and plans to sculpt her impressive physique:

She writes about studying her competitors’ physiques, strengthening her mindset, improving her positive mindset, and generally establishing a championship mentality.

Competitive Back Shot

The amiking00 account belongs to Ami King, who describes herself as a “Maxxmuscle athlete”.

She also posted video of her practicing backstage during a competition:

A post shared by DAYANA CADEAU (@ifbbprodayanacadeau) on

Dayana’s accolades through the Ms. Olympia lightweight divisions have set new records for what female bodybuilders should strive for. Although Dayana is currently retired, her track record of having her first win in 1992 all the way to her last win in 2011 show that a career in female bodybuilding can be long and dynamic.

Bonny Priest

A strong contender for being one of the greatest American bodybuilders is Bonny Priest (bonnypriest.ifbbpro on Instagram) who has stunned the bodybuilding scene through her great physique since 1997.

Being in the same division as Iris Kyle, Bonny has been an influential figure within the heavyweight division. Boasting past world records of bench pressing over 300 pounds, Bonny has always strived to beat any sort of preconceptions others may have had about female bodybuilders.

Annie Rivieccio

Yet another American that has left her mark in female bodybuilding is Annie Rivieccio (annierivieccio on Instagram).

Being a relatively newer figure within female bodybuilding, Annie gained great recognition when she placed first in the NPC National Bodybuilding Competition in the heavyweight division. Since then, Annie has continued to leave strong results at many of the highest divisions of the IFBB competitions held each year. Although currently retired, Annie has influenced a tremendous amount of current up and coming female bodybuilders.

Lisa Aukland

Being not only an influential bodybuilder, Lisa Aukland (lisaaukland on Instagram) also holds a doctorate in pharmacy, making her the only doctor to make this top 5 list.

A post shared by Lisa Ann (@lisaaukland) on

Lisa is known to be a force to be reckoned with in the bodybuilding space, having won all regional and state competitions she has entered. Furthermore, Lisa has eight world records under her belt.

Lisa also made records within the powerlifting field. Many bodybuilders are well aware of the fact that powerlifting has many different dynamics when compared to regular bodybuilding. However, Lisa was able to set records in both fields, being a stark example that one professional doesn’t have to specialize in either one of the two fields.

There are some truly amazing women competing in the sport- and the images they’re able to post to social platforms like Instagram are truly stunning.
